In preparation for publication in “Green Pheasant,” we interviewed Nakanishi Yuki, a Toyohashi brush craftsman from Brush Studio Yuki of Rinku, a group of young women craftsmen from the Tokai region who won the Special Award at the 1st Japanese Culture Grand Prix!

Of the approximately 36 steps required to make a Toyohashi brush, Nakanishi’s precise handwork includes sorting, kneading, mixing, and finishing, and in no time at all the parts of the brush were completed. Nakanishi says that she values ​​making brushes with her heart and brushes that are close to the user. There are 11 traditional craftsmen of Toyohashi brushes (as of 2023), and she said she would like to contribute to nurturing the next generation.

「Green Pheasant」への掲載に向けて、第1回日本和文化グランプリ特別賞受賞東海女性若手職人グループ凛久の筆工房由季・豊橋筆職人の中西由季さんを取材させていただきました！

豊橋筆の制作に必要な約36工程のうち選別・毛もみ・練り混ぜ・仕上げなどの工程を撮影させていただいたのですが、中西さんの一糸乱れぬ正確な手捌きで、みるみるうちに筆のパーツが出来上がり、完成まであっという間の時間でした。中西さんは心を込めて作ること、使い手に寄り添った筆作りを大事にされているそうです。豊橋筆の伝統工芸士は11名(2023年時点)、後進の育成にも貢献したいとお話しされてました。
現在、Green Pheasantでの作品公開に向けて準備を進めております。どうぞお楽しみに！
